1. UNIST, the Voice of Sullivan Win the Grand Prize at the 2011 Korea Social Venture Competition

The Voice of Sullivan, UNIST's student project team, won the grand prize (the Employment and Labor Minister Prize) in the idea field at the 2011 Korea Social Venture[1] Competition.


The president of UNIST (Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology), Moo-Jae CHO, declared that the student project team, ‘the Voice of Sullivan,’ won the grand prize on September 30 at the 3rd Korea Social Venture Competition.


The Employment and Labor Department and the Korea Social Enterprise Promotion Agency hosted, and the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, the Small & Medium Business Administration, SK and Deloitte supported the competition.


A total of 66 teams (48 general teams and 18 youth teams) contended for victory with their own unique social venture ideas. The Voice of Sullivan of UNIST won the grand prize with a web application development idea for the blind.


The eight members of the Voice of Sullivan team (team leader Ki-Hyuk LEE, Woo-Joong KIM, Yun-Kyung KIM, Jung-Min LEE, Hyun-Woo KIM, Dong-Hyun IM, Seul-Ki JUNG and Ji-Yeon BAEK) won three major prizes including the prize from the Minister of Employment and Labor (30 million won), the SK sponsor prize (5 million won and a trip to visit Asian social enterprises) and the Deloitte An-Jin Accounting Firm sponsor prize (5 million won).


The Voice of Sullivan project was started with the goal of making life easier for the blind.

The purpose of the project is to allow the blind use smart phones more easily by developing customized applications.

A total of 569 ideas were accepted for the ‘2011 Korea Social Venture Competition.’ The criteria for selection were social value (30 points), economic value (20 points), the realistic possibility of the project (20 points) and the originality of the idea (30 points). The Voice of Sullivan team got the high score in every section.
